Concert review of the Tin Drum concert at Slim's
San Francisco, CA on July 30, 1999/ Cabs Vogel
Bruce Vogel is a great Tin Dum/Ambrosia Fan from San Jose! He now is our internet videographer!
I set out.......From San Jose to San Francisco to see
Tin Drum open for
Ambrosia at Slim's (owned by Boz Scaggs) on July 30, 1999. WOW! Tin Drum was
setting up as I entered the club and proceeded with their sound check. I had
seen Tin Drum perform in LA a few years ago and then again in 1998 at the
Conejo Valley concert. But this was different.
Tin Drum performed with Burleigh Drummond and Mary Harris (with a little
help on bass from Shem on a few tunes) in a rich and wonderful "experimental"
version of the band. The two began the evening with the haunting song
entitled "Wailing Wall". Mary's singing and keyboard work that night was a
great showcase for her to show the crowd just how much talent she possesses.
Mary made the most of it that night. I was thrilled to see Mary in this
upclose setting.
Next was "Ordinary Day" sung by the one-and-only Burleigh. This bouncy song
was well received by the crowd. I believe this is due to the fact that the
song has a great catchy tune.
Burleigh mentioned that he bought Mary a Grand piano and she promptly wrote
a new song called "Luck of the Irish". This song is a journey. I closed my
eyes and felt that I was really riding in the countryside of Irland. With twists
and turns like an Irish road, I experienced many emotions as Burleigh laid
out some magnificent drumming both in tempo changes and feeling. Mary's
composition was so beautiful. She played flawlessly with determined purpose.
Burleigh, you need to buy Mary another new instrument for next year's
birthday if this is what comes of it.
Off the "Real World" CD was "Surrender" next. A wonderful testament on
how
to settle an arguement with your spouse!!!!
Now, There is this creature that inhabits the Drummond houshold. His name is
Mickey. With a huge round of applause, Mickey
came on stage and sang "Love
Potion #9" with a Bob Marley feel. Mickey has his own band and performed
this one song to let the world know he is on his way. And, "Honey Bear" (the
most
adorable daughter) made an apperance with a greeting "Hi Daddy" from the
audience. The crowd loved this "Guest" appearance!
Next were the songs "Way of the World" and "Lay your Hands". Two
popular
songs off "Real World" that I truely love. I expect to hear these two songs
on the radio any day now because of the instant fondness I've had from the
first listen.
Tin Drum ended their concert with the title track "Real World" and
"Alabaster". Burleigh took over on the keyboard while Mary artfully sang
"Alabaster".
Ok, so what is this reviewer's assessment? Tin Drum is a hidden treasure
that is about to explode into their own. The release of their next CD is expected
within the next two or three months. Burleigh's singing and percussion
skills, along with Mary's keyboard and singing is a perfect conbination. I
am counting the days to see their next performance.
